Spiritual Formation

“Follow me.”

Jesus says “follow me” in some form at least 21 times in the gospel (if you count only His “red letter” words).

“Follow me” is the foundational invitation to discipleship.

He says this when He begins to gather His disciples (John 1:43) and says it again (twice!) in one of His last earthly conversations with them (John 21:19; 22). “Follow me” is where He begins, where He goes, and the core thing His disciples do.

“Follow me.” What does Jesus mean?

Go where I go. Be where I am, Do what I do. Take on the overall manner of my life. Be with me.
To say, “I have decided to follow Jesus,” is to enter into a lifelong, lifestyle apprenticeship to Jesus. To take him as our Savior, Teacher, Lord, and Friend (Renovare Statement). To make and keep my connection with Jesus as the main pursuit of my life. To abide in Him above all else.

That is the heart of spiritual formation: we make choices and form habits that bring us closer to and make us more like Jesus in our daily, ordinary lives and relationships.

Spiritual formation is a process of being formed to the image of Christ for the sake of others. (Invitation to a Journey, M. Robert Mulholland Jr.) It is a process: it takes time. It has a goal: being formed to the image of Christ. It makes an impact: for the sake of others.

It is the LORD who transforms us. There are also ways we contribute to and participate in the process. You will find on this site information about spiritual disciplines, guides to spiritual practices and other resources to encourage you on your journey to follow Jesus in all things. Such things are “means of grace,” ways God uses to fill and transform our lives.

Good news: God has predestined us to become conformed to the image of His Son (Romans 8:29). We are made for this! And He who began a good work in us will be faithful to complete it (Philippians 1:6)

His divine power has given us all we need for life and godliness… and therefore we make every effort to supplement our faith and grow in virtues and in love (2 Peter 1:3-8). Is becoming like Jesus a work of God? Indeed! Are there things we also do? Yes!

We pray that these resources will help you “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 3:18) That they will enable you to follow Jesus closely, wholeheartedly, daily. That you will be able to bring others along with you.
Take the next steps in following Jesus.
