Times Article from the Pastor
Dear Community of Joy,
The surprise tropical storm mirrors our experience this weekend. On the same day that Solzhenitsyn passed away, my uncle James Daniel Duff (or J. D.) and my nephew James Casey Kelleher both went home to be with the Lord. Uncle J.D.’s death was not unanticipated. He was after all in his tenth decade of life. 90 years young, J. D. had served as a sort of refuge for our family through the years. He was my grandmother’s youngest brother. A native of Binger Oklahoma, he once taught my childhood hero Johnny Bench Sunday School. When my parents were in Germany and Montana and we were in college here in Texas, we sometimes stopped through his place in Burleson for a holiday. Just weeks ago, J. D. caught his foot in a fence while mowing his yard. His 93 year old brother, Lavon, who lives alone near Boise, Idaho will catch a plane to come down for the funeral. J. D. is with the Lord.
More like the winds and rain outside today was the phone call from my brother that my 26 year old nephew had been killed in a car accident here in Houston on Sunday. James did not have an easy life, losing his mother, father and stepmother by the time he was twelve. My brother Dan and his wife Karen, former Tallowood members, took James into their home and loved him as their own son. He and a friend were killed in a head-on collision caused by a drunk driver who crossed the median into their lane. Like you in times like this, I have many questions but no easy answers to this tragic loss of life. As Matt Vandagriff preached recently, we live in a world where we are subject to catastrophe. As part and parcel of living in a fallen world, we can lose our lives because of the choices of others. James knew more than his share of sorrow and pain. In the end, though, James knew he was loved by God and by his family. His presence in our family added to the color and texture of our lives. James is with the Lord.
In times like these, we need a Savior. Thankfully, in times like these we have one in Christ the Lord. May His peace and comfort sustain each of us and all of us until He comes! Thank you for your expressions of concern and love. We love loving Tallowood and being loved by you. The Lord is with us!
Sustained,
Duane
